Chinese Researchers Develop AI Diagnostic Tool for Predicting Liver Cancer Recurrence

Liver cancer ranks as the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, with postoperative recurrence rates reaching 70%. Accurately predicting liver cancer recurrence remains challenging. Researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) led by Sun Cheng and collaborators developed the "TIMES" scoring system for predicting liver cancer recurrence. By quantifying spatial distribution features of immune cells in the tumor microenvironment, this system achieves 82.2% accuracy in predicting hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence risk. The team translated their scientific findings into a practical AI diagnostic tool—a publicly accessible TIMES online platform where users can upload pathological staining images to obtain recurrence risk scores.

The "TIMES" scoring system, formally named "Tumor Immune MicroEnvironment Spatial" scoring system, represents the first liver cancer recurrence prediction tool integrating spatial immune information.
